City Arts Center presents, ‘OT: Our Town,’ a documentary film by Scott Hamilton Kennedy, which explores an inspirational story of a group of students on a journey of self-discovery.
At Dominquez High School in Compton, California, basketball is valued above all else. The end of the year is marked by a traditional cycle of proms and graduation. There hasn’t been a play at the school in over 20 years. In an effort to make a change, English teacher Catherine Borek attempts to mount a theatrical production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, the classic play about the American town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire.
With no budget and no stage, Ms. Borek chooses Our Town for its universal and timeless themes of community, family, love and loss, life and death, with the hope that her students might see themselves reflected in the roles they play.
Join us at City Arts Center, 6 p.m., November 3, and watch this inspiring film about student actors struggling to relate to the material only to discover the joy of transformation itself.
After the film, an open discussion concerning the importance of arts in education will be led by a guest panel of speakers including:
Stephanie Crossno - Oklahoma A+ Fellow and Director of Casady School Theatre
Jennifer James - Director of Oklahomans for the Arts, Inc.
Christina Pickard - Artist and Regional Coordinator, Oklahoma A+ Schools
